We next spotlight senior Rowan Barry of Greely. She was the 202 Class B freestyle state champion. We asked her about her plans for
next year and her state meet preparations.
1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
I was cross-training for most of the season due to injury, but I started skiing a couple of weeks before states to try and be as ready as possible. The week before states I reduced my training volume and focused on recovery to be rested for the races.
2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
I tried to focus on enjoying my last state meet and having fun on the trip with my team.
3) What was going through your mind at the start?
At the start, I was thinking through the different parts of the course and trying to stay warm.
4) What do you contribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my coaches for teaching me to ski and pushing me to improve each year.
5) What are your goals/plans for next year?
Next year, I will be running track and cross country at Cornell University, and hopefully I'll keep skiing in my free time.
6) What surprised you the most about this season?
I was surprised by how much snow we got.
7) What moment/event will you remember the most from the season?
I will remember EHSC the most. I thought the course was really fun, and I didn't get to race much this year, so I enjoyed the chance to race a lot without much pressure on performance.
8) What do you like most about Nordic Skiing?
I like how it combines fitness, strength, and technique, so there are always ways to improve. I also like getting outside during the winter and having fun with my teammates.
9) Anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you so much to coaches, wax techs, and boosters!
