Our next state champion sportlight is Nick Newman of Mtn. Valley.  He won both the Class C slalom and giant slalom races at Big Rock.

My preparations leading up to this years season started in the weight room, I was trying to get stronger so I could compete with the stronger kids. Finally when we hit snow I was skiing 6 days a week trying to peak at the right time, states. All my teammates were on snow just as much trying to grasp the state title as a team.

I handled the pressure at states just by telling my self to go ski fast and ski my race. Whether or not I finished I still had a great season, so when I pushed out of the start it was like anyother race, I went all out to the finish.
When I found out I won, I was beyond excited, because that was the first state title I've ever won, closest I ever came was second. The biggest surprise was the margin I had at the end of the race. Then when I found out we won the state title as a team it made everything more exciting because we all worked so hard to win that title.
My goals were to win states and to make top six on the Maine team and top 30 in Easterns. I met all of those but one of my coach (coach lavalle) has a good point those are outcome goals, the best goals to set are performance goals, and if you meet those you will meet your outcome goals. My performance goals were to put the thought of winning aside and ski like I knew how to technically strong. Another was to move my hips more to generate speed and throw myself down the hill and I feel I succeeded those goals.
