The Aroostook County Championships were held at the Nordic Heritage Center and the Fort Kent Outdoor Center this week in sunny warm conditions.

Wednesday’s classic races presented a kick waxing challenge for the coaches with windblown dry snow warming to 45 degrees by race time. Luke Streinz of Southern Aroostook won the boys race followed closely by Miguel Sanclemente of Fort Kent (9 sec). Justin Pelletier of Madawaska finished third. Kayley Bell of Caribou won the girls classic race with Mya Eno of Fort Kent finishing a close second (4 sec). Nancy Martin of Fort Kent finished third.

Thursday brought more warm weather for the skate pursuit (low 50s at race time) and very slow conditions on the challenging FKOC homologated loop. Luke Streinz won the overall pursuit and the skate stage for the boys. Miguel Sanclemente finished a strong second, with Justin Pelletier third in both races. Other notable performances included freshmen Rafael Sanclemente of Fort Kent and Jim O’Meara of Caribou finishing fourth and fifth in the skate stage and moving up several places in the pursuit.

An exciting girl’s race followed! Mya Eno quickly closed the 4 second gap to Kayley Bell. The two skied together the entire race, with Bell setting a blistering pace and Eno fighting to hang on. Their Caribou and Fort Kent teammates lined the finishing straight as Eno prevailed to win a sprint finish. She won both the pursuit and skate stage with Bell finishing second. Mira Kelly of Fort Kent finished third in both races.

In the team competition, the Caribou boys and the Fort Kent girls are the 2021 Aroostook League team champions. The day’s activities concluded with a fun cross country ski cross race and an informal ski jumping competition!
