1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
I train and race on the weekends for Franconia Ski Club at Cannon mountain. I try to get on snow and train as much as possible and work out throughout the week at my local gym.
2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
I’ve raced so much throughout the years, so I tend to not get nervous or stressed before races, but before my state race I definitely was nervous. To cope with this I just had to stay focused and tell myself I would be fine if I skied the way I normally ski.
3) What was going through your mind at the starting gate?
We will now spotlight Nora McCourt of Mt. Blue. She was the 2024 Class A Classical and Freestyle state champion. She also won the KVAC classical and freestyle and her team won the Class A state title. We asked her about her success, what she likes most about Nordic, and more.
1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
There was a lot of sickness going around our ski team before states so I spent a lot of time wearing a mask and trying to avoid illness. My training was pretty normal, which meant going out on the Titcomb trails every day and looking for the trails with the least amount of dirt patches! We were lucky to even be on snow, but the conditions were pretty challenging.
2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
I tried really hard to turn my race nerves into positive energy, which fueled me while I skied. Going into it, I tried to stay positive mentally and focus on feeling fast and having fun with my teammates. Our team waxing parties and making goofy signs for everyone was a great way to stay relaxed and keep the nerves away.
3) What was going through your mind at the start line?
We will now spotlight Henri McCourt of Mt. Blue. He was the 2024 Class A Classial and Freestyle state champion. He also won the KVAC classical and freestyle and his team won the Class A Nordic title. We asked him about his plans for his senior season, what he focuses on, and more.
1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
I was sick several times early in the winter and got sick again the week before states, so I focused a lot on resting and getting fully healthy before states. I ended up feeling solid at states but it’s hard to focus on rest when there’s snow on the ground.
2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
I tried to focus on just enjoying skiing fast and well instead of on what I needed to do to achieve a specific result to try and take pressure off. I also tried to focus on team results and trying to help the team be in as positive of a place as possible going into states, which really helped me relax, stay positive, and get in the zone.
