We will now spotlight Margo Hesson of Falmouth who was the 2025 Class A Giant Slalom state champion whose combined time was more than two seconds faster than 2nd place. We asked her about what was on her mind at the start and her favorite moment from the season:
1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?
I have been training with my high school team at Lost Valley during the week and with Gould Academy some weekends this winter. I also got to train at Sugarloaf the weekend before the state meet to get a feel for the slope, I think this was super beneficial.
2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
I try to keep myself from overthinking these competitions too much. It helps to have close friends on the team to keep the atmosphere light and fun. I remind myself that this is what I've trained for and I just need to trust myself.
3) What was going through your mind at the start?
The first course seemed a bit challenging after inspecting it, I felt a little nervous approaching the gate, but I knew if I found the right line and was conscious of what we had inspected, I would be okay. The second run I went thoughtless and just tried to get down the hill and maintain my lead.
4) What do you contribute your success to?
I've spent a lot of time training over the years; the repetition has made the whole routine of ski racing second nature to me. I feel really comfortable when I'm in gates.
5) What are your goals/plans for next year?
I hope to win my 4th State Championship with my team and compete to the best of my abilities individually. If that leads to another podium finish all the better!
6) What surprised you the most about this season?
After not skiing for 20 months after tearing my ACL, I was nervous about this season and how my knee would affect me. I was thrilled to have these results after coming back, it made all of the rehabilitation worth the effort.
7) What moment/event will you remember the most from the season?
I think winning my first race back was super meaningful. It was emotional because it made me remember how much I love and appreciate the sport; I didn't realize how much I had missed it.
8) What do you like most about Alpine Skiing?
I love how there are team and individual aspects. You are competing as a team to win, but you are also competing for yourself to get a good result. It makes the sport competitive and fun.
9) Anything else that you would like to add?
I'm already looking forward to next year!
