1/17 Quarry Road Course Update
Quarry Road is ready to host the 2019 Maranacook Waves!   The course conditions range from good to amazing.  The sections of the course that have snowmaking, the stadium area and the final 0.6km of the course are in amazing shape.  They are being groomed daily with the Pisten Bully, have only perfectly white snow, and are in best-ever shape.  The other North Loop is all natural snow.  It is being groomed by Pisten Bully which makes for really nice, wide, smooth skiing, but because coverage is a bit thin, there are a few dirty spots on the trail.  We lucked out in that these dirty spots are all on climbs where they'll have little impact and the predicted inch or so of snow on Friday should cover them nicely for race day.  The downhills feature good coverage and great, safe skiing.  For those of you who did not ski at Quarry Road last year or yet this year, the major downhill on North Loop has been complete re-designed by Fred Bailey Trail Designs and re-routed.  It skis very easily and safely now.  This is an improvement since we hosted the 2017 state meets and a change you'll welcome!

Course Description:
The course starts in our gradually uphill stadium then follows undulating terrain for the first 0.6km.  There you will face your first climb which is rated a "B" climb (with "A" being the most difficult).  From the top of this climb you'll drop down to the low point of the course at approx. 1.2km.  From the low point, you'll face the largest climb on the course.  It is rated an "A" climb but is on the easy side of that rating.  It does not get as steep as Black Mountain's high school hill, but does have about the same total climb.  Most skiers will be able to use V1 technique up the entire climb and many will even be able to mix in V2 on the more gradual sections.  From here it is down and gradual down until you face the final climb at 2.2 km.  We call this Hero's Hill because it is in full view of the stadium and all of your fans... and because it has a nice long downhill leading into it you get to look like a hero every time!  This is a wide, steep hill.  There's plenty of room to pass here if you are trying to make a move just before the finish.  From the top of Hero's Hill it is a downhill into the stadium with a quick turn either out for your second lap or into the finish.  Total course length is 5.2km and the terrain will be the most difficult we've faced on the high school circuit this winter, so be ready!  It is not FIS homologated, but would almost certainly meet FIS standards.
