IMG 1531Our next state champion spotlight is Quinn Maguire of Marshwood.  He was the 2024 Class A giant slalom and slalom state champion.  He also won the SMAA giant slalom.  We asked him about his goals for next year, his favorite moment from this season, and more.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

I train and race on the weekends for Franconia Ski Club at Cannon mountain. I try to get on snow and train as much as possible and work out throughout the week at my local gym.

2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?

I’ve raced so much throughout the years, so I tend to not get nervous or stressed before races, but before my state race I definitely was nervous. To cope with this I just had to stay focused and tell myself I would be fine if I skied the way I normally ski.

3) What was going through your mind at the starting gate?

In the start gate I picture myself in the course and picture what Im going to look like in each section of the course. I take deep breaths to slow my breathing down and push hard out the gate.

4)  What do you contribute to your success?

My love for skiing in general is a huge contributor towards my success and my coaches and friends play huge roles in how much success I’ve had.

5)  What are your goals/plans for next year?

My goal for this year is to do the same thing I did last year and win both sl and gs so I can beat my brother in winning a total of four state meets which he only won three.

6) What surprised you the most about this season?
I was most surprised how good the race conditions were because even though it didn’t snow much and wasn’t good weather conditions the snow was firm throughout the season and continued to be a great surface for racing.

7) What moment/event will you remember the most from the season? I will most remember my second run of sl the second day on states where I found out I won and swept both gs and sl for boys.

8) What do you like most about Alpine Skiing? My favorite thing about Alpine racing is the adrenaline rush you get from racing and finishing a run knowing you did a great job.
