State Champion Spotlight--Liam Niles

We now spotlight Liam Niles of Portland.  Liam was the 2020 Class A Classical and Pursuit State Champion.  We asked him about what surprised him Boy Winners 2 1this season and his favorite thing about skiing.

1) What were your preparations leading up to the state meet?

Leading up to states I focused on making sure my body felt fit and well rested. I stretched a lot and did less intense training than usual so that my body was at its full potential.

2) How did you deal with the pressure and emotions that come along with competing in a state meet?
In my mind leading up to states my main competition would be my homie and teammate, William Jordan. I had been catching up to William throughout the season but up until states he had pretty handily beaten me in most skate races. My goal was to do as well as I could in the classic race and hopefully push hard enough in the skate to put up a competitive result that would be hard for William to beat. My physical preparations and continual improvement over the season gave me confidence and helped me trust in my body during the race.

3) What was going through your mind at the starting gate?
Not much was going through my mind right before the race. I was focused on how my body felt and did everything I could to make myself feel properly warm.
4)  You won the classical and the pursuit, what do you contribute your success to?
I ski because I enjoy the whole process and the process wouldn’t be worth it if it weren’t for my teammates and the physical freedom and chance for expression that skiing provides.

5)  What are your goals/plans for next year?
I’m not sure of exactly what I’ll be doing next year but I am sure it will involve taking part in some sort of physical activity.

6) What surprised you the most about this season?
I was really surprised when I ate it on the first ski of the season but was ok.

7) What moment/event will you remember the most from the season?
I’ll remember the skate race at states the most because it’s the most efficient I’ve ever felt skiing.

8) What do you like most about Nordic Skiing?
My favorite thing about skiing is the satisfaction I feel from skiing efficiently. I love the focus necessary to improve my technique and it’s fun trying to connect my mind and body to go fast.
